About Crop Profit Calculator
Crop Profit Calculator is an independent website offering free estimation tools and plain-language guides on crop economics. Everything here is built around one question: does this crop pay, on the numbers you actually have?
About Crop Profit Calculator
This site provides an online crop profit calculator along with written material explaining how the underlying figures work. It is designed to be useful in any farming region, which is why it supports several currencies, land units and yield units rather than assuming one country’s conventions.
We are an independent publisher. This website is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of any agricultural department, bank, cooperative, certification body, input supplier, or official organisation of any kind. Nothing published here should be read as an official record, an approval, or advice from such a body.
The tools are free to use and require no account. The calculation runs entirely in your own browser, so the figures you type are not sent to us, not stored, and not shared with anyone. Closing the page clears them.
Our Purpose
Crop economics is not complicated arithmetic, but it is arithmetic that often goes undone, or gets done on the back of an envelope halfway through a season when the money has already been committed. A grower may know the price of seed and the going rate at market without ever putting the two together against labor, fuel, irrigation and everything else that a field quietly consumes.
Our purpose is to make that calculation quick enough that it actually gets done, and clear enough that the result is worth acting on. Not just a profit figure, but the numbers around it: what the crop cost in total, how much each unit of land returned, how hard the money worked, and the lowest price that still covers the season.
We also publish the formulas openly rather than hiding them inside the tool. Anyone should be able to check the working, disagree with it, or reproduce the same result on paper.
What We Provide
Two things: a calculator that does the arithmetic, and educational material that explains what the arithmetic means.
A crop profit calculator
Enter your crop, planted area, expected yield, selling price and season costs, and get gross revenue, total farming cost, net profit, profit per acre or hectare, return on investment, and break-even selling price.
Flexible units and currencies
Land in acres, hectares or square meters; yield in kilograms, tonnes or bushels; results shown in the currency you buy and sell in, so nothing has to be converted by hand.
Published formulas
Every calculation the tool performs is written out in plain language with a worked example, so you can follow exactly how each figure was reached.
Educational guides
Explanations of revenue, cost, margin, return and break-even price, including where estimates commonly go wrong and which costs are most often forgotten.
What we do not provide is equally worth stating. We do not offer financial, agronomic, legal or investment advice, we do not sell inputs or produce, we do not price your crop for you, and we do not act as an intermediary in any transaction.
Who Can Use the Calculator
The maths of crop profit is the same everywhere. Only the crops, currencies and units change, which makes the tool useful to a fairly wide range of people.
- FarmersCheck whether a crop pays before committing land, seed and a season of work to it.
- GrowersWork out margins on smaller plots, greenhouse blocks or market garden beds.
- Farm managersCompare fields and rotations, and find which input is doing the most damage to a margin.
- Agricultural studentsPractise revenue, cost, margin and ROI calculations on realistic figures rather than set exercises.
- Agricultural businessesModel grower margins when planning services, supply terms or advisory work.
- People researching crop economicsTest how yield, price and cost assumptions interact without building a spreadsheet first.
Our Approach to Calculations
The calculator applies standard, widely used farm accounting relationships. There are no proprietary models, no adjustment factors, and no assumptions layered on top of what you enter.
- Your figures, unchanged Every result is derived only from the values you type. We do not substitute regional averages, apply inflation factors, or quietly correct a number that looks unusual.
- Standard formulas Revenue is yield multiplied by price. Cost is the sum of your entries. Profit is the difference. ROI and break-even price follow from those three. Nothing more elaborate is involved.
- Open working Each formula is published on the site with a worked example, so any result can be checked by hand.
- Honest gaps Where a figure cannot be calculated meaningfully, such as return on investment when no costs have been entered, we show nothing rather than a misleading number.
- No stored data The calculation runs in your browser. Your inputs are never transmitted to us or retained after you leave the page.
Accuracy and Limitations
We want to be direct about what this tool can and cannot tell you, because an estimate presented with too much confidence is worse than no estimate at all.
The arithmetic is reliable. The result is only ever as good as the information entered into it. Every figure the calculator returns is an estimate built on your own assumptions about yield, price and cost, and if any of those assumptions is wrong, the output will be wrong by a matching amount. We make no claim that results are precise, guaranteed, or suitable as the sole basis for a financial decision.
Several things sit outside the calculation entirely. Weather, pests, disease and soil condition move actual yields. Market prices change between planting and harvest, and quality grading affects what you are finally paid. Taxes, levies, commissions, land rent, loan interest and insurance are not calculated for you and must be entered manually if they apply. Losses in storage and transport, and produce kept back rather than sold, reduce what actually reaches market.
In short: the results are estimates based on the information entered by the user. Actual farming costs, yields, market prices, taxes, and profitability can vary by crop, location, season, and farm conditions. Please treat the output as a planning aid, and consult a qualified agricultural or financial professional before making significant commitments.
Why Transparency Matters
Farming decisions carry real financial weight. A grower choosing between two crops, or deciding whether to accept an offer at market, deserves to know exactly where a number came from before acting on it. A calculator that produces a confident figure without showing its working asks for trust it has not earned.
That is why the formulas are published rather than hidden, why the limitations are stated on the page rather than buried in fine print, and why we say plainly that we are an independent site with no official standing. It is also why nothing is stored: there is no reason for a calculator to keep your farm’s cost structure, so it does not.
If you ever find a result on this site that you cannot reproduce by hand from the published formulas, we would consider that a fault worth fixing, and we would like to hear about it.
